Step-by-step: booking your test

  1. Go to gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test and create an account with your email. Never book through any other site — third-party "booking services" charge extra and you'll still need a GOV.UK booking.
  2. Enter your name and address exactly as on your photo ID. One typo means you lose £50 on the day.
  3. Choose a test centre. You can pick any of the ~30 UK centres — not just the nearest. Less-busy centres often have slots within a week.
  4. Pick a date and time at least 3 working days from today. Most centres run multiple slots per day.
  5. Pay £50 by debit or credit card. You'll get an email confirmation with your booking reference — keep it.
  6. On the day: arrive 15 minutes early with your photo ID and proof of address.

What ID to bring

Bring one valid photo ID. Accepted documents:

  • Passport (any country, must be in date)
  • Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)
  • UK photo driving licence (full or provisional)
  • Immigration status document with photo
  • Travel document issued by the Home Office

The name on your ID must exactly match your booking — including middle names and spelling. Test centres turn away around 1 in 30 candidates for ID mismatches.

Rescheduling and cancellations

  • Free reschedule if you change at least 3 working days before your test.
  • Less than 3 days' notice: you forfeit the £50 and must book again.
  • Miss your slot or arrive late: no refund, no rebooking — you start over.
  • If you fail: wait 7 days, then book and pay £50 again.

Don't book until you're scoring 22+ on mocks

A failed test costs another £50 plus a week's wait. Most candidates who pass first time score 22+ out of 24 on five consecutive timed mocks before booking.

FAQs about booking

Where do I book the Life in the UK Test?

The only official booking site is gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test. Anything else is a third party — do not pay them, you'll still need to book again on GOV.UK.

How much is the booking fee?

£50, paid online by debit or credit card when you book. The fee is non-refundable if you fail or miss your slot.

How far in advance do I need to book?

At least 3 days in advance. In practice, popular test centres in London, Birmingham and Manchester are often booked 2–4 weeks out.

What ID do I need to bring?

One valid photo ID: passport, Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), UK photo driving licence, or an immigration status document with photo. The name and address must exactly match what you entered when booking.

Can I reschedule my test?

Yes, free of charge if you reschedule at least 3 days before your test date. After that, you forfeit the £50 and have to book again.

How many test centres are there?

About 30 official Life in the UK Test centres across the UK. You can choose any centre — you're not restricted to the one nearest your home address.

What if I'm turned away on the day?

If your ID or proof of address doesn't match your booking exactly, the test centre will refuse you and you'll lose the £50. Double-check spelling, postcode and document expiry before you confirm.
